An authentic German army (Heer) enlisted men's combat belt buckle from the World War II period. The item is constructed from struck aluminum coated in its distinctive factory field gray (feldgrau) paint. The obverse features the standard central medallion depicting the Wehrmacht eagle clutching a swastika, enclosed by the traditional motto "GOTT MIT UNS" and an oak leaf wreath on a pebbled field. The buckle comes complete with its original light brown leather adjustment tab. The leather bears a clearly legible oval manufacturer's stamp reading along with the production year "1940". The dual-prong attachment mechanism, zinc catch, and spindle are fully intact, structurally sound, and mechanically functional. The buckle surface shows honest wear with minor paint loss on the high points of the eagle and outer edges, exposing the bright aluminum underneath and providing a great combat-used look. The leather remains flexible with its original tight, light-colored stitching intact. This specimen represents a textbook example of strictly marked mid-war field equipment.
Historical context:
The year 1940 marked a major transition in the manufacturing of German belt buckles. Due to the strategic preservation of raw materials for the war effort, aluminum buckle production was completely phased out in 1940 in favor of stamped steel versions. Aluminum buckles from 1940, factory-painted in field gray instead of having the bright silver finish of pre-war years, represent the final production runs using this material. The firm Friedrich Keller based in Oberstein was a recognized supplier of military field gear, and matching sets featuring their clearly dated leather tabs are highly prized among global militaria collectors today.
