An exceptionally scarce, historically important German SS 8-Year Long Service Medal (SS-Dienstauszeichnung 4. Stufe), preserved as a museum-grade complete set with its original presentation case. The medal is designed as a circular award with a dark bronze, frosted chemical finish. The obverse features a highly detailed oak leaf wreath enclosing centered SS runes, superimposed over a large, static swastika with polished border lines. The reverse features a large embossed numeral eight in the background, overlaid with the bold inscription: FÜR TREUE DIENSTE IN DER SS. The top loop is intact, holding the elongated suspension ring and its functional horizontal mounting pin. This textbook piece comes alongside its original cornflower-blue moiré ribbon and the legendary, highly coveted rectangular black cardboard box featuring crisp silver SS runes stamped on the lid and its original inner tray separation.
Historical context:
The SS Long Service Awards were instituted by Adolf Hitler on January 30, 1938, to honor continuous, loyal service within the ranks of the Schutzstaffel (including the SS-VT, SS-TV, and Allgemeine SS). The 4th class medal was designated for eight years of active duty and was designed by Professor Karl Diebitsch of Berlin. Because of the limited size of the pre-war SS cadre and the widespread destruction of SS-branded insignia during the collapse of the Third Reich, authentic pieces are incredibly difficult to find. A genuine medal matching its original issue box with clean runes represents one of the ultimate holy grails for advanced World War II military collectors worldwide.
