This item is an original award case designed for the first-class Danzig Cross, which is one of the most elite decorations associated with the history of the Free City of Danzig. The external construction of the box is based on a sturdy frame covered in red leatherette with a fine grain texture. The interior of the lid is lined with luxurious light satin featuring the gilded oval hallmark of the renowned maker Juwelier Hülse with branches in Berlin, Baden-Baden, and Vienna. The lower part of the case contains a custom-fitted insert made of deep burgundy velvet that has retained its original structure. The characteristic vertical recess in the insert is designed for an award equipped with a vertical pin, which clearly confirms that the case was intended for the first-class version of the cross. The box features a functional metal hinge and a classic push-button locking system that operates without issues. The overall condition is very good, while the natural patina on the internal materials and minor external wear highlight its historical authenticity.
Historical context:
The Danzig Cross first class was established on August 31, 1939, and was awarded very infrequently, with historical records mentioning only about eighty-eight recipients. The firm Juwelier Hülse of Berlin was the official and sole supplier of these prestigious sets, making this case one of the rarest phaleristic containers in the collector's market. Owning an original box for such a rare decoration significantly increases the historical and market value of the entire set.
