We present an incredibly realistic porcelain figurine depicting the Red-Crested Cardinal (Paroaria coronata), crafted by one of Germany's most prestigious manufacturers, Hutschenreuther in Selb. The sculpture portrays the bird in a natural and dynamic pose, perched on a twisted, gnarled branch adorned with dark berries, one of which the bird proudly holds in its beak. This piece is distinguished by masterful underglaze painting that faithfully captures the species' contrasting colors: from the bright red crest and mask to the white underparts and gray-black wing plumage. Standing at approximately 21 cm, the model is characterized by extraordinary attention to detail, evident in the precise rendering of feather textures and the organic form of the base. The underside features the iconic Hutschenreuther Selb hallmark, confirming the authenticity and high craftsmanship of this collectible item.
Historical context:
This model was designed by Gunther R. Granget, one of the most significant 20th-century animal sculptors who collaborated with Hutschenreuther starting in the 1950s. Granget's bird series gained worldwide acclaim for its unique blend of artistic vision and near-scientific anatomical precision. The Red-Crested Cardinal, native to South America, was a favored motif among porcelain designers due to its exotic and striking coloration. These figurines, produced across various periods including highly valued examples from 1955–1968, remain a highlight in the most demanding collections of figurative porcelain globally.
