Description

Original German organizational uniform button designed with a small diameter specific for the side flaps of field service overseas caps and early field headgear issued to the SS-Verfügungstruppe and Waffen-SS. The obverse layout incorporates a clean circular profile filled with a dense pebbled texture that creates an excellent visual depth behind the polished high-relief Totenkopf skull emblem with crossbones set directly behind the lower jawline. The reverse side utilizes a textbook two-piece metal construction with a solid, factory-soldered wire attachment eyelet that remains mechanically stable and fully functional. Stamped into the smooth back surface is a complete arrangement of crisp, embossed organizational property markings, highlighting the official RZM control circle on the right flank, double SS runes framed within a circular cartouche directly above the loop, and the numeric maker assignment 63 on the left sector. The alloy surfaces preserve an authentic service patina and minor age shading, validating the undisturbed historical longevity of this pre-war headgear component.

Historical context:
Small skull-pattern buttons (Totenkopfknöpfe) were implemented into the official uniform dress code starting in 1935, predominantly intended to secure the foldable side panels of field service overseas caps. To enforce absolute political control over equipment distribution, the Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) strictly monitored supply contracts and assigned unique identification numbers to vetted badge and button makers. The specific numeric identifier 63 was assigned to the metalware firm of Hans Schulz & Co. located in Oppach. Authentic field cap examples carrying the distinct Oppach punch marks are highly sought after by modern advanced faleristic collectors today due to their limited production runs and direct connection to early transitional paramilitary uniform manufacturing.
