An original and highly sought-after German M42 steel helmet in the Luftschutz (Air Raid Protection) configuration. This is the desirable combat shell variant, which is significantly scarcer than the common "Gladiator" style helmets. The interior rim is clearly stamped with the manufacturer code and size EF66 (Emaillierwerk A.G., Fulda, shell size 66) and the lot number. It features the characteristic M42 raw, unrolled edge and stamped ventilation holes. The shell retains its original dark blue satin finish (Luftschutz-blau) typical for civil defense and air defense units. Many of these "beaded" variants include a raised horizontal ridge around the crown, specifically designed to distinguish non-combatant helmets from standard frontline Wehrmacht gear.
Historical Context:
The M42 Luftschutz model produced by the Fulda factory (EF) is recognized by collectors as one of the rarest air defense helmet variants. Introduced in 1942 as a simplified production model, these combat shells were occasionally issued to Luftschutz personnel late in the war when specialized civilian helmet production struggled to meet demand. Combat-style M42 shells with EF markings in Luftschutz configuration are a rare find compared to the mass-produced Gladiator types.
