Original Prussian military award Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse) reinstituted in the 1914 version by Emperor Wilhelm II. The construction is based on a three-dimensional, magnetic iron core with its factory blackened finish and a multi-piece silvered frame featuring distinct, deep ribbing. The obverse center displays the embossed letter W representing King and Emperor Wilhelm II. The upper arm is adorned with the Prussian royal crown, while the lower arm bears the reactivation date 1914. A clear manufacturer's hallmark is stamped directly on the suspension loop intended for the ribbon. The frame surface exhibits a fine, aged natural patina with subtle oxidation along the edges, confirming the historical authenticity and undisturbed condition of the piece.
Historical context:
The Iron Cross of 1914–1918 served as a symbol of bravery and stood as one of the most prominent military decorations of the German Empire during the First World War. Due to the high number of recipients, production was delegated to both the main state mint and numerous licensed private jewellers and medal workshops, which stamped unique initials or numbers on the suspension rings for quality control. The textbook three-piece assembly and a strictly magnetic core remain the fundamental criteria for authentic historical items of this era.
