This authentic German commemorative medal, measuring 32 mm in diameter, was struck in silver-plated brass or tombac with a matte finish to mark the annexation of Austria in 1938. The obverse depicts a symbolic scene of unity where a figure standing on a podium adorned with an eagle helps another man up, representing Austria's integration into the Reich. The reverse shown in the image features the central date March 13, 1938, encircled by the prominent political slogan "EIN VOLK · EIN REICH · EIN FÜHRER," with the segments separated by small swastikas. The medal is attached to its original red ribbon with black and white bordered edges, and the item remains in very good condition with sharp details and a well-preserved silver coating over a finely pebbled background.
Historical context:
Designed by the renowned artist Richard Klein, this award was instituted on May 1, 1938, as the first in a series of occupation medals, often referred to as the "Flower War" medals, celebrating the bloodless territorial expansions of the era. It was awarded to Wehrmacht soldiers, SS personnel, and state officials who either participated in the entry into Austria or played a significant role in the diplomatic preparations for the Anschluss. The powerful imagery of the two figures on the obverse proved so popular that it was subsequently reused for the Sudetenland and Memel medals, which differed only in their reverse inscriptions and dates.
