Description

Original German military campaign medal Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42, established to recognize service during the severe winter combat on the Russian front. The obverse features a central stylized eagle with outspread wings clutching a static swastika superimposed on a laurel branch. The upper rim of the circular medal is integrated with a prominent M35 steel helmet resting upon a stick grenade, which houses the suspension loop. The reverse displays the clear embossed uppercase inscription WINTERSCHLACHT IM OSTEN 1941/42, situated above a crossed sword and oak leaf branch. The piece is produced using a stamped zinc manufacturing process and retains its original loose suspension ring. Included is an authentic shortened fragment of the official ribbon displaying its signature red, black, and white striped pattern. The metallic surface exhibits a dark natural zinc patina with minor authentic age-related oxidation.

Historical context:
The Eastern Front Medal was officially instituted on May 26, 1942, to honor German Wehrmacht personnel and paramilitary units who engaged in active defensive operations during the grueling winter cycle between November 15, 1941, and April 15, 1942. Due to the extreme frostbite conditions suffered by the troops, the award was colloquially nicknamed the "Frozen Meat Medal" (Gefrierfleischorden) by frontline combatants. The colors of the ribbon carried intentional meaning: red symbolized blood, white represented the snow, and black stood for mourning lost comrades. Manufactured by numerous licensed private firms, it remains a textbook example of late-war Third Reich military campaign recognition tokens.
