The item for sale is an original and rare German Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) Leader's Dagger, also known as the Hauer für Führer Model 1937. Manufactured by the renowned company Alcoso (Alexander Coppel Solingen), marked with the characteristic scales logo on the blade.
Appearance and Condition
Very nice condition: The item is preserved in generally very good condition, with a visible, natural patina that adds authenticity and historical charm.
Signed blade: The blade features clear, etched manufacturer's markings "Alcoso A.C.S. Solingen" with the scales logo in the center. The motto "Arbeit adelt" (Labor ennobles), typical for this model, is likely present on the reverse side. The blade is in nice condition, with typical signs of use, such as runner marks from extraction and return to the scabbard.
Fittings and hilt: The metal fittings of the hilt and scabbard have a consistent, dark patina. The crossguard features the RAD emblem (a spade resting on two wheat shafts) and an eagle's head on the pommel. The hilt features off-white celluloid grip plates, typical for the officer/leader versions.
Hangers (straps): The dagger is equipped with brown leather hangers (straps), which complement the patina well.
Historical Context
The Reichsarbeitsdienst (National Labor Service, RAD) was a compulsory labor organization in the Third Reich, formed in 1934. In 1937, a new, smaller, and more elegant dagger (the Leader's Hewer) was introduced exclusively for RAD officers/leaders, replacing the earlier, larger hewer worn by enlisted men. This dagger was a dress item and status symbol, not a combat weapon. The motto "Arbeit adelt" was intended to emphasize the Nazi ideology of labor. Alcoso was one of the main manufacturers of these rare and collectible items.
