This artifact is an exceptionally prestigious and rare variant of the German Cross in Silver, attributed to one of the most esteemed phaleristic workshops – C.E. Juncker of Berlin. Although the piece is unmarked, its unique construction based on five assembly rivets (the "5-Niet" variant) is a hallmark of the early to mid-war production series from this firm. These rivets, arranged in a distinctive diamond pattern with a central point, stabilize the multi-piece structure of the award, joining the starburst base with the enameled swastika and the silver-plated laurel wreath. The award is characterized by a massive pin with a broad base that tapers downwards, which, along with the specific shape of the hinge and catch, provides undeniable evidence of the Berlin-made die. The entire piece is covered in a noble, aged patina that highlights the high-quality silvering and the sharp details of the wreath bearing the date 1941.
The historical context of the German Cross in Silver makes it one of the most sought-after objects in military collections, as it was awarded far less frequently than its gold counterpart. While the gold version honored bravery in combat, the silver variant was established in September 1941 for commanding officers and support personnel for outstanding merit in military leadership not involving direct contact with the enemy. It is estimated that only about 1,115–2,500 such crosses were awarded, making it an elite decoration given the scale of the war. Products from C.E. Juncker were considered the benchmark of quality, and their 5-rivet silver crosses are regarded by experts as a pinnacle of German award technology. Owning such a rare variety, preserved in impeccable technical condition, is a mark of a top-tier WWII phaleristics collection.
