An original commemorative event badge (tinnie) associated with the German youth hostel movement during the Third Reich era. The item is die-struck from metal (likely zinc alloy), featuring a horizontal design.
Obverse: The central element is a stylized eagle with outspread wings, clutching a diamond with a swastika (the Hitler Youth emblem) in its talons. The eagle's wings transition into horizontal bars that form the background. Below the wings is the raised Gothic script inscription: "Josef Goebbels" on the left and "Jugendherberge" on the right.
Reverse: Fitted with a horizontal pin back. The reverse side bears a clear manufacturer's mark: "F. HOFFSTÄTTER BONN".
Condition: In good collectible condition. Displays a natural patina and darkening of the metal typical of zinc alloys. The eagle's strike details and the lettering remain legible. No significant mechanical damage.
Historical Information
This badge is a rare example of an emblem issued for propaganda purposes or as a contribution piece for a specific youth hostel (Jugendherberge) named after Joseph Goebbels, the Reich Minister of Propaganda. During this period, the youth hostel network was closely integrated with the Hitler Youth organization, serving as a site for youth indoctrination during trips and rallies. The firm F. Hoffstätter of Bonn was a renowned producer of high-quality decorations and tinnies. This badge is a significant artifact for studying the cult of personality and youth structures in Nazi Germany.
