An exceptional two-piece patriotic badge in the form of an oval medallion, issued by the Supreme National Committee (NKN). The item features the following physical characteristics:
Obverse: The central element is a silvered, enameled shield depicting an eagle breaking shackles (the so-called "Allegory of Poland"). The background is filled with deep red enamel with a smooth finish, enclosed in a metal frame.
Reverse: Solid and smooth, made of base metal (tombac/brass) with visible traces of period silvering. A characteristic plaque with a raised inscription: "POLSKI / SAMARYTANIN / 1914" is attached to the bottom.
Fastening: A long horizontal pin with a twisted shaft, mounted on a sturdy hinge and secured by an open catch. The system is fully functional.
Condition: Very good collector's condition. Enamel is free of chips or cracks. Natural light patina is visible on the metal. All mounting elements (rivets/plaque) are stable.
The "Polish Samaritan" badge was established in July 1914 by the Medical Department of the Supreme National Committee (NKN) in Krakow. It served both as a commemorative item and a fundraising token, with proceeds dedicated to the medical and sanitary care of Józef Piłsudski's Polish Legions. It remains one of the most recognizable and valued symbols of the Polish military effort during World War I.
