Original German SA Sports Badge (SA-Sportabzeichen) in bronze, established to promote physical fitness and military training. The obverse displays a design featuring a vertically positioned sword superimposed on a swastika, surrounded by an oak leaf wreath. The reverse bears a full and clear ownership inscription from the main sports office, along with the prominent manufacturer's name: BERG & NOLTE LÜDENSCHEID. On the left side of the wreath, a unique award serial number 609000 is clearly stamped. The badge is equipped with a classic vertical pin mounted on robust hinges, which remains fully functional. The surface of the decoration exhibits a natural, aged patina with no modern alterations.
Historical context:
The SA Sports Badge was instituted in November 1933 by SA Chief of Staff Ernst Röhm and became an official state decoration in 1935. It was awarded after passing rigorous fitness tests, including track and field, grenade throwing, cross-country marching, and military defense skills. The serial number 609000 on this specific piece perfectly corresponds to the pre-war period, when the award was highly popular among members of paramilitary organizations. The firm Berg & Nolte from Lüdenscheid was one of the key and highly regarded manufacturers of metal equipment parts and decorations for political organizations of that era.
