Original German SA Sports Badge (SA-Sportabzeichen) in silver grade, awarded for exceptional physical excellence and military preparedness. The obverse showcases the classic design of a vertically positioned Roman sword superimposed on a swastika, enclosed by a full oak leaf wreath. The reverse bears the distinctive embossed ownership inscription EIGENTUM D. OBERSTEN SA-FÜHRUNG running along the blade alignment. On the left and right sides of the inner frame, the unique and highly collectible stamps of the uncommon manufacturer are fully visible: W. REDO and SAARLAUTERN. The badge is fitted with a functional, heavy vertical pin mounted on a robust top hinge, secured at the bottom by a classic wide retaining catch. The metallic surface retains its authentic, matte silver finish accompanied by natural aged oxidation.
Historical context:
First instituted in 1933, the SA Sports Badge was elevated to an official state decoration in 1935. The silver tier was significantly harder to acquire than the bronze grade, requiring the recipient to continuously pass demanding physical, marching, and defense tests over a multi-year period. This particular piece is highly sought after by militaria enthusiasts due to the maker mark of Werner Redo, located in Saarlautern (modern Saarlouis). The municipality was named Saarlautern exclusively between 1936 and 1945, providing an exact historical window for the manufacture of this high-quality, authentic award.
