Description

Original German Luftwaffe Ground Assault Badge (Erdkampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe) instituted to reward air force personnel for achievements during direct ground combat deployments and infantry operations. The award features an oval configuration composed of a highly detailed oak leaf wreath joined at the bottom base by a traditional ribbon tie. The central area displays a prominent design of a stylized storm cloud from which a sharp, singular lightning bolt strikes down, surmounted by the flying Luftwaffe eagle clutching a static swastika. The face retains a stunning degree of its original finish contrast, preserving an attractive golden-tone wash across the wreath fields beautifully paired against a dark gunmetal grey oxidation on the storm cloud structure. The flat reverse profile is fitted with its complete and original vertical attachment system, utilizing a sturdy needle-pin mounted securely within a wide block hinge and closing fully into the lower horizontal wire retaining catch. The entire pin mechanism remains mechanically tight and fully functional. The metallic base is coated with a uniform, genuine golden-brass age patina free from any mechanical cleaning, proving its undisturbed preservation grade.

Historical context:
The Luftwaffe Ground Assault Badge was officially authorized on March 31, 1942, by Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring to establish a distinct military honor for air force members forced into frontline infantry duties, particularly within the Luftwaffe Field Divisions (Luftwaffen-Felddivisionen) and elite paratrooper combat elements active on the Russian Front. Designed by the prominent Munich graphic artisan Sigmund von Weech, its expressive thunderbolt layout remains highly iconic. To qualify for the decoration, servicemen had to participate in three separate combat operations on three distinct days, replacing standard Wehrmacht assault declarations for ground-fighting aviators. Production was delegated to certified manufacturing firms under the strict supervision of the Orders Chancellery, ensuring high-craftsmanship standards for official front-line combat decorations.
