This item is a rare, authentic "tinnie" style commemorative badge, marking the 28th District Gymnastics Festival (28. Gau-Turnfest) of the Nordwest-Turngau district. The event took place in 1928 in Teplitz-Schönau (modern-day Teplice, Czech Republic). Struck from bronzed brass, the badge features sharp embossed details, including a central motif of a hand emerging from clouds holding a vertical sword over the circular emblem of the Deutscher Turnverband. The inscriptions, notably including the district name "Nordwest-Turngaues" and the location, remain perfectly legible. The reverse shows a hollow-back design with its original vertical mounting pin intact. The entire piece is covered in a rich, dark patina with minor traces of oxidation, confirming its historical authenticity as a century-old artifact.
Historical context:
The badge serves as a significant historical record of the Deutscher Turnverband (DTV), the primary gymnastics organization for the German minority in interwar Czechoslovakia. While these Gau-Turnfest events were athletic in nature, they also functioned as powerful demonstrations of national identity for the Sudeten Germans. The "gymnastics cross" (Turnerkreuz) featured on the badge, composed of four "F"s (Fresh, Pious, Joyful, Free), was a precursor to the political symbols that would later dominate the region. The 1928 Teplitz-Schönau festival remains a key example of the cultural and social life of the Sudetenland during the late 1920s.
