Description

Original elite German diplomatic award – the Merit Cross 3rd Class of the Order of the German Eagle (Verdienstkreuz III. Stufe des Ordens vom Deutschen Adler). This high-tier decoration was instituted by Adolf Hitler in May 1937 as an award of merit intended strictly for foreign nationals, primarily diplomats, military attachés, and high-ranking state officials. The architectural core of the award consists of a Maltese cross struck from silver or gilded tombac, finished with immaculate white hot enamel on both sides. Positioned elegantly between the four cross arms are stylized German national eagles with outspread wings, each clutching a wreath containing a white-enameled swastika medallion. The enamel across the cross fields and the central swastikas remains in flawless, museum-grade condition, entirely free of fractures, chips, or surface restoration. The top arm of the cross is integrated with a gilded fan-shaped suspension loop secured to the ribbon ring. The medal hangs from its original period red moiré ribbon trimmed with crisp white-black-white edge stripes, featuring a horizontal brass safety pin fastener pinned to the reverse. The medal is housed in its original, luxurious hard-shell presentation case finished in red leatherette, decorated with a fine gold-leaf border and a central national emblem stamped on the outer lid. The box utilizes a fully functional spring-loaded brass front latch. The inner lid is lined with white silk, displaying a sharp, gold-embossed inscription written in classic font: "Verdienstkreuz III. Stufe des Ordens vom Deutschen Adler". The lower insert is custom-molded to shape and lined with clean, jet-black velvet. This authenticated cased set represents a premier example of rare wartime German foreign service regalia.

Historical context:
The Order of the German Eagle held a unique position within the Third Reich's award hierarchy, as it was strictly forbidden from being awarded to German citizens, with the rare institutional exceptions of Foreign Ministers Konstantin von Neurath and Joachim von Ribbentrop. The award's beautiful aesthetic was designed by the renowned professor Richard Klein. In the established 1937–1943 grade structure, the 3rd Class functioned as a Commander's rank equivalent, bestowed upon international ambassadors, ministers, and key military figures to cement diplomatic coalitions. Because these pieces were only distributed to select foreign dignitaries, their production figures were exceedingly low compared to standard military combat awards. Surviving examples that retain their fragile, specifically titled presentation cases are monumental rarities heavily sought after by elite global militaria buyers.
