This is an original, perfectly preserved pair of slip-on shoulder boards intended for a medical NCO of the elite German Army (Heer) division, Grossdeutschland. The boards are constructed on a dark green wool base, typical of early to mid-war uniforms. Each strap features a prominent, pinned-on metal GD monogram cypher made of tombak, the official emblem of this prestigious formation. The boards are edged with cornflower blue (dark blue) piping (Waffenfarbe), which specifically identifies the wearer as part of the medical service (Sanitätstruppe). The rank of Feldwebel (Sergeant) is indicated by the silver-aluminum tresse surrounding the edges and a single silver rank pip on each board. Furthermore, two rows of tresse at the base of the straps denote the status of a medical officer candidate (Sanitätsoffizier-Anwärter).
Historically, the medical personnel of the Grossdeutschland Division played a vital role during the heavy fighting on the Eastern Front, where the unit was frequently deployed as a "fire brigade" to reinforce critical points in the defensive lines. This pair of shoulder boards is a rare example of complete insignia combining elite unit status with the specific branch color of the medical services. These units operated their own sanitary battalions, and their medical soldiers wore the same elite symbols as the combat formations. A complete pair like this, given the less common branch color paired with the GD monogram, is exceptionally rare on the militaria market and is highly sought after by advanced collectors of Wehrmacht insignia.
