Description

An original German collar tab intended for members of the 29. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (italienische Nr. 1), constructed in a parallelogram shape from black wool uniform cloth. The obverse features a highly detailed, machine-embroidered fasces symbol in silver-grey thread. The reverse of the insignia is reinforced with period-correct light tan buckram stiffener, which remains visible through the opening of the folded wool backing. The construction is finished with characteristic heavy white mounting thread, typical of unissued "Dachau-made" examples recovered from the SS clothing depot in 1945. The item remains in excellent condition, showing no signs of being sewn onto a tunic or any mechanical damage, confirming its status as a textbook historical artifact from the Third Reich era.

Historical context:
The 29th SS Division was formed in 1944 from Italian volunteers who, as non-Germanic personnel, were prohibited by regulation from wearing the standard SS Sigrunen. Instead, they were issued unique national insignia, featuring the fasces as a primary symbol of Italian heritage. Most surviving examples of this specific manufacturing style are known as "Dachau-made," originating from the SS tailoring workshops at the Dachau concentration camp, where they remained unissued until the end of the conflict.
