Description

Original combat belt buckle issued to personnel of the German Order Police (Ordnungspolizei – OrPo), die-stamped from heavy sheet steel.
The front centerpiece exhibits the distinctive police-pattern insignia showcasing a unique eagle with down-swept wings clutching a swastika enclosed inside a solid circle.
The central motif is surrounded by a prominent circular medallion framed by double stylized rope borders, decorated with a laurel leaf wreath tied at the base and the traditional motto in Gothic script: "Gott mit uns" ("God with us") en.wikipedia.org.
The entire face of the buckle presents a distinctive factory-applied pebbled background matrix engineered to suppress reflections in operational areas.
The reverse features the standard mid-to-late war heavy steel catch sleeve welded vertically with flat, flared anchoring feet.
The attachment system retains its genuine, fully functional dual-prong steel belt wire bar assembly turning freely on a fixed cross-pin.
The metal surfaces preserve an authentic aged patina, honest light oxidation, and historical field grime embedded within the strike depths, proving its original era provenance.
This steel fabrication represents a scarcer, mid-war utility variant compared to the more commonly encountered pre-war aluminum types.

Historical context:
The vast majority of early Third Reich police buckles were produced in aluminum or lightweight alloys. This specific artifact represents a scarcer, later-war field configuration manufactured from pressed steel starting in 1940, a change mandated to conserve critical light metals for military aircraft production. The historic "Gott mit uns" motto used by the police forces was carried over from traditional Prussian security services en.wikipedia.org. During the war, Order Police battalions (Polizeibataillone) were deployed widely on the Eastern and Western fronts for rear-area security, which necessitated the mass issue of these rugged, non-reflective steel combat buckles.
