Original German Army marksman's lanyard (Schützenschnur), an award for proficiency with small arms within the Heer. This specimen is a Grade 1 (Class 1) lanyard, constructed from matte-silver braided aluminum/bullion cord.
The central feature is a first pattern shield (issued until January 1939), struck in matte aluminum and mounted on a decorative braid rosette. The shield depicts the Wehrmacht eagle clutching a swastika against a pebbled background. The lanyard is complete with loops for attachment under the right shoulder strap and to the second front button of the tunic.
Historical context:
Introduced on June 29, 1936, these lanyards replaced earlier sleeve stripes for marksmen. They were awarded to EM/NCOs who met specific shooting qualification standards. There were twelve ascending grades, with grades 1 through 4 featuring this specific silver-colored shield.
