An original German two-place medal bar, professionally mounted on a stiffened parade backing.
1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz II Klasse) – a textbook three-piece construction featuring a magnetic black center and silvered frame.
Honor Cross for Front Fighters (Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer), commonly known as the Hindenburg Cross, marked with 1914-1918 dates and crossed swords.
The awards are suspended from original period ribbons: the black and white ribbon for the EK and the black-white-red ribbon for the Honor Cross.
The set is in very fine condition, showing a natural age patina on the metal parts and minor aging of the silk ribbons.
This bar serves as a complete and representative display of a German soldier's frontline service during the Great War.
Historical Context
This type of medal bar was commonly worn by veterans who consolidated their awards after 1934. While the Iron Cross was awarded for bravery during the war itself, the Honor Cross was established on July 13, 1934, by President Paul von Hindenburg. It was the first general commemorative medal for all WWI participants, and the version with crossed swords was reserved specifically for combatants who served on the front lines.
