Historical Information
The Mauser S84/98 III bayonet was the standard bayonet of the Third Reich army, commonly used with the Mauser Kar98k rifle. Examples with the "S/176" code were produced by the company P. Weyersberg & Co. from Solingen. The S/ code system was introduced to mask the identity of manufacturers during the German rearmament program, which violated the Treaty of Versailles. The production of this specific example is dated to 1935, making it an early, pre-war model. Most importantly, the presence of Kriegsmarine (German Navy) markings makes this a very rare collector's item, documenting the early equipment of the Third Reich naval forces. While "Ostmark" was a name used in Nazi propaganda for Austria after the Anschluss, not a naval region, the "O." marking in Kriegsmarine numbering might indicate a specific naval district (e.g., Ostsee - Baltic Sea) or unit, which is typical for the early navy marking system.
