Authentic German Cross of Honour of the German Mother (Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter) 1st Class in Gold. The obverse features flawless blue and white enameling with a central black swastika on a white background, encircled by the Gothic script inscription: DER DEUTSCHEN MUTTER. The gilded reverse bears the crisp etched institution date 16. Dezember 1938 alongside Adolf Hitler's facsimile signature. The award comes with its original, full-length blue and white striped neck ribbon. The set includes the original dark blue presentation case featuring a gold embossed depiction of the cross on the lid. The white silk interior lining of the lid is clearly maker-marked: HANS GNAD, WIEN VII. Both the medal's enamel and the presentation box with its functional spring catch remain in excellent historical condition.
Historical context:
The Mother's Cross was instituted on December 16, 1938, as part of a state propaganda program designed to boost the birth rate within Nazi Germany. The 1st Class award in Gold was strictly reserved for mothers who had given birth to and raised eight or more children, provided they met the strict racial purity and ideological reliability standards of the regime. Vienna-based manufacturers like Hans Gnad were renowned for their high-quality craftsmanship, making cased Austrian examples highly sought after by militaria collectors today.
